Overview

The clinical case.

Pattern hair loss responds to FDA-approved medications. Finasteride blocks the conversion of testosterone to DHT (the primary driver of male pattern hair loss); topical minoxidil prolongs the hair growth phase. They work best when used together.

What to expect

Initial 4–12 weeks may include a "shed" before regrowth. Results typically visible at 3–6 months. Discontinuation reverses gains over 6–12 months.

Common questions

Asked and answered.

What are the sexual side effects of finasteride?
Decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory disorders occur in <2% of users. Most resolve on discontinuation. Post-finasteride syndrome (persistent side effects after stopping) is rare but documented.
How long until I see results?
Visible regrowth typically appears at 3–6 months. Earlier (4–12 weeks) you may experience increased shedding before regrowth — this is normal.
